Current affairs

On August 17, for the first time since 1999, the Norwegian Supreme Court reviewed the penalty level for import and dealings with LSD. The Court will decide whether or not today’s penalty level for dealings with LSD is in accordance with an updated scientific assessment of the risk and health profile.

WHICH SIDE OF HISTORY ARE YOU ON?

Emma Sofia is a political organization, working to get Norway into a drug policy based on evidence and respect for human rights.

You should be the one in charge of your own conciousness

Psychedelics has been in use for thousands of years and have been an important part of international culture for more than fifty years. In a free and open society, everybody should be free to follow their own conscience and be in control of the contents of their minds, as long as they do no harm to others.

Repeated expert assessments confirm that psychedelics and MDMA involve far less risk than alcohol, both for the user and the society at large.  Many prominent people consider this a convincing argument for new ideas in drug policy, including former US President Barack Obama and the UN's seventh Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Putting risks in perspective

Nothing in life is without risk, and there are risks associated with the use of psychedelics and MDMA. When putting that risk in perspective, MDMA and psychedelics do not emerge as particularly dangerous. The risk can be compared to activities that are considered relatively safe, such as skiing or playing soccer.

PSYCHEDELICS

Psychedelics (such as magic mushrooms, LSD or mescaline) can lead to profound personal experiences. The use of psychedelics is for many a genuine spiritual practice, in the same way as meditation and yoga is.

Using psychedelics can be confusing and challenging. The negative effects of psychedelics can often be compared with those reported from intense meditation.

Psychedelics are not addictive. Serious injuries caused by irrational actions and accidents are extremely rare.

Deaths due to poisoning is virtually unknown. Psychedelics are not shown to damage the brain or any other organs.

A single dose of a psychedelic drug can result in a lasting positive effect. Psychedelics have a potential in the treatment of mental illnesses.

MDMA

MDMA often leads to profound personal and interpersonal experiences.

In high doses, MDMA may lead to serious physical symptoms. Deaths due to MDMA use is extremely rare.

Several small studies suggest that a few treatments with MDMA can produce a lasting positive effect. MDMA has a potential in the treatment of mental illnesses.

““In three hours we got closer to each other than we had been in eight years. I was completely clear in my mind, neither of us felt intoxicated — the only intoxication was love and understanding for each other.
— Anonymous politician, NRK Ytring, 24. Mars 2015.

Risks and precautions

Psychedelics and MDMA in themselves are not dangerous, but under the prohibition policy of today, we have an open and unregulated market. The lack of age restrictions and quality control are consequences of the prohibition.

As a temporary public health measure, we recommend using testing equipment if you have decided to use psychedelics or MDMA. Testing equipment are readily available on the Internet.

You should not be under the influence of psychedelics/MDMA or any other drug while doing activities demanding high attention - such as driving a car or caring for children.

In several expert assessments, including two published in The Lancet, researchers assessed the damage potential in a variety of drugs. MDMA and psychedelics score consistently low in these assessments.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

We are a growing movement, and we need your support. There is a growing frustration and discomfort among many, also within the health and justice sector, over the main strategy in the Norwegian control regime. Punishment and prohibition is not working, and it is extremely expensive. The prohibition policy increases health risks.
